STOREFRONT RENOVATION
New York, NY
1993
An adjustable façade, a usable wall.
The wall is divided into segments. Vertical seams separate the wall into panels that pivot side to side, like revolving doors. Horizontal seams separate the wall into panels that pivot up and down; like louvers; the lower panels function as tables and benches, or as pedestals for models or sculpture.
When all the panels are rotated open, the gallery becomes part of the street, and the street becomes part of the gallery.
When all the panels are rotated closed, light from the inside seeps outside, through the seams, and vice versa. The exterior might be made of inside walls, and the interior made of outside.
The façade is different for each exhibition; it’s adapted to the needs of each exhibition – the exhibition makes the façade.
