PROGRAM: Re-use of the dump PROPOSAL: A city of magic carpets The garbage dump is covered over by a mat of stones under steel mesh. The rugs of the city are laid over the mat. As methane gases are released from the dump, and the dump changes shape because of the release, the rugs hug the shifting contours of the mound. The gas feeds the city from below; the city is powered by garbage. Each rug is a web of bowls that ride the tide of the dump. When a bowl tilts on the slope, the cup inside – the ball inside -- swivels to stay horizontal. A rug of water for a self-sustaining city: 1. Fish farms. 2. Swimming pools. 3. Fountains. A rug of green: 1. Grazing fields. 2. Crops. 3. Trees & plants. A rug of buildings: 1. Factories (mirrored). 2. Stores & offices (transparent). 3. Houses (half-mirrored, half-transparent). As the rugs drape over the mound, they lift, at the top of the mound, to frame a public space below. You’ve walked between rugs, into a plaza of waterfalls and hanging plants; light glows down from the bowls above. From here you access the city, up the columns; upstairs, you walk along the rim from one bowl to another. Time passes, and the flying carpet falls.
