The floodable base of the island is a landscape of no-landscape; it’s other-worldly but not untouchable – you walk in and out of craters and crevices, you sit inside the craters, there’s no need to do anything, you can only experience the end of the world here, or the beginning of a new world. THE HOVERING WORLD. The Performing Arts Center proper is cantilevered off the base, it escapes floods, it hovers above the water like a spacecraft. A SPACESHIP OF SPACES. The surface is mirrored, it’s sheathed by reflections of city and river and sky, of the cratered landscape and the people moving over it. A SURFACE THAT EATS ITSELF. The surface is sucked in, into the spaceship, to make entrances and circulation tubes, opera house and concert hall, restaurants and reference libraries, bookstores… STRANDED IN THE JUNGLE. The circulation-tubes cross through un-parks, in-between the programmed spaces: they’re overgrown, sprawling, spreading like weeds, these jungles grow inside the building. AN INSIDE OF OUTSIDE. Perforations in the surface of the spaceship lets sunlight in, into the jungle. It rains and snows inside the jungle. COMING IN OUT OF THE WATER. The largest craters on the base of the island are filled with capsules, that function as hotel rooms; for those visitors who want to stay a while, a hotel is scattered throughout the floodable base of the island. GOING OUT ONTO THE WATER. When the river floods, the floodable part of the island is unaffected; there’s no greenery to spoil, no buildings to wash away. The hotel capsules are tethered to the craters on pistons; when the river floods, the hotel capsules float. </p> <p>This project view belongs to <a href="../../project/seoul_performing_arts_center/index.html">Seoul Performing Arts Center</a>, and is threadged with:</p> <ul> <li><a href="../../thread/2005/index.html">2005</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Buildings/index.html">Buildings</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Dar%C3%ADo%20N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez/index.html">Darío Núñez</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Eduardo%20Marques/index.html">Eduardo Marques</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Hotels/index.html">Hotels</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Inside-Out/index.html">Inside-Out</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Interiors/index.html">Interiors</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Islands/index.html">Islands</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Korea/index.html">Korea</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Mix-Swarm-Multitude/index.html">Mix-Swarm-Multitude</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Move-Change/index.html">Move-Change</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Parks%20and%20Gardens/index.html">Parks and Gardens</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Peter%20Dorsey/index.html">Peter Dorsey</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Push%20and%20Pull/index.html">Push and Pull</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Reflective/index.html">Reflective</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Sarina%20Basta/index.html">Sarina Basta</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Seoul%20Performing%20Arts%20Center/index.html">Seoul Performing Arts Center</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Theaters/index.html">Theaters</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Unbuilt/index.html">Unbuilt</a></li> <li><a href="../../thread/Watersides-Outlands/index.html">Watersides-Outlands</a></li> </ul> <p>(<a href="../../img/385/interior_dy_1.jpg">I</a>, <a href="../../img/385/interior_dy_1.jpg.large.jpg">L</a>, <a href="../../img/385/interior_dy_1.jpg.thumb.jpg">T</a>, <a href="../../index.html">A</a>)</p>
