In-between the remains, the new museum expands and contracts. Between columns, the glass façade is pulled out or in to become a box, a room, outside or inside. Above, the glass roof juts up and steps down, like a city skyline. Where a glass box pushes in, a strip of grass and plantings comes with it; though outside the museum walls, you’re within the museum-space. Where a glass box pulls out, you’re inside the walls of the museum, but at the same time in the park. These glass extrusions store the museum’s interior architecture. From the façade extrusions, an opaque wall slides on track -- from the roof protrusions, a ceiling lowers on cable -- into the main body of the museum. Wall is joined to wall to ceiling to ceiling, to make different-sized exhibition spaces. At the edges, above and below, sliding walls make adjustable offices, classrooms and cafeteria. At night, the glass extrusions are lit from within.
