PROGRAM: The walkway should be shielded from the surrounding buildings and traffic, and from the bare walls of the ramps. PROJECT: Screens rise up around the walkway: the screens curve over the walkway, like shells, to become roofs: the shells function as screens. The surrounding ramps and their retaining walls, the traffic on the ramps, the surrounding buildings – it’s all turned into flickers of images, as if in a movie, a kaleidoscope, a flipbook. The screens are like Venetian blinds. As the slats rotate on their axes, the surroundings peek through: the site changes; the surroundings – the ramps, the buildings – slip in and out as you walk down the walkway. All but one screen are mirrored louvers: buildings are reflected down to the ground, while passers-by are reflected up onto the screens. From the bottom of each screen, light bounces up from mirror to mirror; the light is reflected back, down onto the walkway – the mirrors illuminate the walkway. You can sit within the screens; you sit on light, on the lit horizontal beam at the bottom of the screen. One screen stands alone, above you, on top of the bus ramp. This screen is different from the others; the reflected light from mirrors would have blinded traffic here, so the slats of this screen are transparent blue. As you look up, the canyon of buildings around you turns blue.

This project view belongs to Shibuya Station, and is threadged with:

2000

Built

Darío Núñez

Japan

Lights

Reflective

Screen-Overlay-Camouflage

Shibuya Station

Transparent-Translucent

Tube-Tunnel-Funnel

Wave-Ripple-Flow

(I, L, T, A)
