<h1><a href="../../index.html">Acconci Home</a></h1> <h2><a href="../../projects/index.html">All Projects</a></h2> <h2><a href="../../threads/index.html">All Threads</a></h2> <!--<h2><a href="/acconci/dev/views/">All Views</a></h2>--> <h2>1</h2> <p>SLIPPING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York, NY 2003 A continuous band of translucent spandex: it makes walls and ceilings for projections – Acconci Studio architecture, furniture and projects, 2000-2003. The ribbon is attached to the top of a column, at one end of the gallery. The ribbon circles the column and spreads out like an umbrella; as it rounds the column, it swerves down, gradually, until it hits the floor. Once it hits the floor and leaves the column; it gradually lifts from diagonal to vertical as it ‘walks’ from one column to the next. As it approaches the next column, it gradually lowers from vertical to diagonal until it touches the next column, where it rises to be an umbrella again. As the fabric swirls down from horizontal above to diagonal below, it reduces headroom. So that people don’t bump their heads, benches are placed at the falling edge of the fabric; the benches reflect the arcs of the billowing fabric above – they narrow and widen as headroom allows. The benches are neoprene-covered wood; the neoprene is the color of television – one pink, one purple, one blue. The display-system makes an atmosphere, an air, of swirling veils and images and words.
