Let’s make a plaza whose ground is words, whose air is words. Our project starts at the side of the Johnson building, down the street. A floor of words sprawls out from the base of the building, a roof of words cascades from the roof of the building. Or there might be a screen of words in front of the Johnson building: the screen turns and folds to make a roof and floor of words; the floor is solid, like stone or concrete, the roof is transparent, like mesh, like glass. In either case, the floor and roof of words cross the street and head toward the plaza. At the edge of the plaza, the roof and floor make the pavilion building: the building is a building of greenery – the walls zigzag, or curve, in and out to mix trees and offices. From the pavilion building, the words spread out into the plaza. They fill the floor of the plaza; they rise up to the buildings – a roof of words joins one corner to another. This roof of words functions as storage for an event-structure, a performance-space. When needed, the event-structure (stage, audience bleachers) can be pulled down onto the ground. The floor of words is bulged and folded to make seating; the floor dips in to make a place for water (the words might be flexible here, the rushing water bends the words, words float loose in the water). From the plaza, the floor and roof of words slip out through the side streets. The roof of words descends as it continues down the street.

This project view belongs to London New Street Square, and is threadged with:

2005

Buildings

England

London New Street Square

Parks and Gardens

Peter Dorsey

Seating

Streets and Plazas

Unbuilt

(I, L, T, A)
