The water stretches out, on either side of you; it’s a pool of water, 30 feet wide. As you walk along the pathway, the far end of the water rises: the water slopes down toward you. Keep walking: the water closes in on you – the slope is steeper, the water around you is higher. It’s as if these are wings of water: at first the wings are spread out at your sides – and now the wings flap, the wings are folding, you’re wrapped up in wings of water. On each side now, the water is vertical; you walk between walls of water, thirty feet high. Along the way, you can sit within the water. Seats are embedded within the slopes, within the walls. Where the slope of water is shallow, it’s as if you’re floating on water. As the slope of water gets steeper, you’re surrounded by water. You sit inside walls of water, thirty feet high, In the meadow, where one path of water intersects another, a room of water – a node of water – a corner of water is formed outside the paths. Whereas the paths of water are solitary places, or private places, intimate places, the nodes of water make social space, and public space. The water borders one kind of space for you, on one side, while bordering another kind of spaces for others, on the other side. Light shines up from the bottom of the slopes, the bottom of the walls; light glows up through the water that falls down. Light glows from the embedded seats, within the water.

This project view belongs to Austin Water Park, and is threadged with:

2002

Austin Water Park

Darío Núñez

Gia Wolff

Parks and Gardens

Twist-Warp-Morph

Unbuilt

United States

(I, L, T, A)
