TWISTING-PLANES PARK
Gurtel Median, Vienna, Winter 2004
A twisting line of planes runs through the length of the median. They’re ellipsoid planes; each successive plane turns, shifts, further, from down to up to down again on the other side.
The planes are ‘sandwiches’ of steel mesh, front and back; climbing plants grow inside, lights are embedded within the plants – light changes depending on the density of the foliage.
These planes, these sandwiches of mesh, these 'cages' of climbing plants, are perforated; each hole is like a telescope, or a tunnel: you look through from smaller to larger holes, or vice versa – at some point you can walk through the holes – sometimes the hole is covered with mirror so, instead of seeing through, you look back at yourself.
The holes get large enough to contain an ‘activity-area’: basketball court, soccer field, amphitheater.
Ramps go through the holes, and take you up to different levels. As a ramp goes through a hole, spin-offs stretch out over the face of the plane: you walk over the face, you walk across a mesh of plants – it’s as if the plane of a park has been lifted up, it’s as if you’re walking on air, you sit in niches within the plants.
