CIRCLES IN THE SQUARE
MARIENHOF, MUNICH
1998
SITE: A plaza that was never meant to be a plaza; it resulted from bombings during the Second World War.
PROJECT: A city inside the city: spheres rise like bubbles through the surrounding buildings.
In the center, and interspersed throughout, tree-filled spheres function as gardens; a spiraling ramp folds up at the edge to make a continuous bench; you sit within the foliage of trees. From the Garden-Spheres, you access other globes, other worlds:
Two Subway-Spheres, that take you down into the subway station below; a Parking-Sphere; a Market- Sphere; a Theater-Sphere, whose 2-way mirrored surface exposes at night the four stages inside; an Aviary-Sphere; a Skating-Sphere, where skateboarders appear as shadows behind translucent ramps; a Swimming-Pool-Sphere, that extends down to the subway station underground.
Where two spheres interlock, the shared space is closed with frosted glass. These Service-Spheroids contain toilets, storage, maintenance closets, dressing-rooms, snack-bars.
